Designed by Scottish architect Alexander Thomson, this Grade 2 listed Victorian Gas Lamp used to be in the centre of a traffic island at the bottom of Old Kent Road. In 2010 TFL removed the island as part of plans to change traffic flow and the lamp was moved to outside the White Hart Pub. The traffic island had underground public toilets and the lamp used to serve as an air vent for the toilets as well as providing light in the evening.
The lamp is the only surviving example of Alexander Thomson’s work outside of Scotland and for that reason was awarded a Grade 2 listing.
