in the making: London Festival of Architecture 2017

For the third time the Peckham Weeklies are contributing to the London Festival of Architecture. Continuing from last year, we are again focusing on the Old Kent Road. We are exploring the history of making and are preparing an event on the 23-24th June 2017. Get invovled and come along to our weekly meetings on Wednesday evenings. (For venue details please sign up to our mailing list.)

Here a summary of what we are planning:

INDUSTRIAL EVOLUTION

Revealing a history of making on the Old Kent Road

The Old Kent Road (OKR) is one of London’s oldest roads, and for well over a century it has been at the heart of making in the city. From tray manufacturers to printers, construction merchants to couriers, the estimated 800 businesses trading along the OKR are a rich resource for the city, manufacturing what it needs, as well as offering 1000s of local jobs. It has played a key part in the ongoing evolution of this area.

As one of the GLA’s ‘opportunity areas’ many of the OKR businesses are earmarked for clearance to make way for the 25,000 new homes that Southwark Council has promised. But what role does industry play in shaping and making a community? What are the consequences of getting rid of it?

Peckham Weeklies would like to put on an event exploring how this area has been shaped by what has been made, traded or sold here. We want to look at the consolidation of local networks, the provision of skills and training since the first 19th century businesses were established, and try to find out how far those networks extend – greater London, the South East, Scandinavia? We have research from students at the Cass School of Architecture, who have been mapping local businesses to discover exactly what kind of social and economic infrastructure they have fostered.

Our venue is the base for a new kind of making: 60 vacant garages on the Ledbury Estate are being transformed into the Livesey Exchange, providing studios, workshops, training and community and event space.

We will offer films, photographs and research, plus talks and local ‘industrial memory trail’ walks with people who have a foothold in the OKR’s past, as well as a stake in its future.
